The Man Who Lost His Body (16 October 1997)

Looks at Ian Waterman, who at 19 caught a virus that destoyed half of his nervous system and who, in spite of medical assertions that he would never walk, feed or move again, managed by sheer will-power to get back some mobility. Examines the question of how far the brain can over-ride disease or physical problems.

The Midas Formula Stockmarket Formula (2 December 1999)

This is the extraordinary story of a beautiful mathematical formula that changed the world, the financial markets, and indeed capitalism itself. It could do the unthinkable – it took the risk out of playing the money-markets. To its inventors it brought the Nobel Prize for economics. To those who used it, it brought great wealth. But this glittering tale would end in tragedy.

Living Forever (4 January 2000)

In the 21st century, will scientists reach the Holy Grail – will they discover the fountain of youth? Will we live forever? Scientists are now close to understanding the biological mechanisms that make us age and make us die. A few decades ago, no-one thought we could add years to life. The maximum life-span possible for humans was believed to be a hundred or so – and all because of an immutable genetic clock.

Extreme Dinosaurs The Science Of Giants (23 November 2000)

Horizon follows the scientists to Argentina as they unearth a brand new species of dinosaur; the biggest carnivore ever discovered. Not yet named, this new creature is even bigger than T. rex, the so-called ‘king’ of the carnivores. The new giant South American predator had a skull bigger than a man that was full of serrated, knife-like teeth and long powerful jaw muscles. They could dissect their prey with almost surgical precision.

Supermassive Black Holes (30 November 2000)

n June 2000, astronomers made an extraordinary discovery. One that promises to solve one of the biggest problems in cosmology – how and why galaxies are created. Incredibly, the answer involves the most weird, destructive and terrifying objects in the Universe – supermassive black holes. Scientists are beginning to believe that these forces of pure destruction actually help trigger the birth of galaxies and therefore are at the heart of the creation of stars, planets and all life.

Atlantis Reborn Again (14 December 2000)

Although scientists believe they have categorically disproved the myth of Atlantis, the idea is more popular now than ever before. The latest exponent of the theory of a single lost source for all civilisation, is Graham Hancock. Although he doesn’t call it Atlantis, his compelling ideas about a sophisticated society destroyed in a flood 12,000 years ago seem to be based on a reworking of the original Atlantis myth, whose survivors brought culture, religion, monument-building and civilisation to the rest of the world. Horizon puts Graham Hancock’s controversial theories about the past to the test, dissecting his evidence for a lost civilisation.

Death Star (18 October 2001)

Out in deepest space lurks a force of almost unimaginable power. Explosions of extraordinary violence, are blasting through the Universe every day. If one ever struck our Solar System it would destroy our Sun and all the planets. For years no one could work out what was causing these awesome explosions. Now scientists think they have identified the culprit. It’s the most extreme object ever found in the Universe; they have christened it a ‘hypernova’.

Cloning The First Human (25 October 2001)

There is another question that few ever ask: is the science actually ready yet for cloning healthy humans? Horizon follows the latest research, which has led many scientists to believe that Zavos and Antinori’s plans to clone the first human could end in tragedy. The programme also meets couples like Matthew and Desirée Racquer (above) who think cloning offers them the only way to raise a child who is truly their own.

The Lost Pyramids Of Cara (31 January 2002)

The magnificent ancient city of pyramids at Caral in Peru hit the headlines in 2001. The site is a thousand years older than the earliest known civilisation in the Americas and, at 2,627 BC, is as old as the pyramids of Egypt. Many now believe it is the fabled missing link of archaeology – a ‘mother city’. If so, then these extraordinary findings could finally answer one of the great questions of archaeology: why did humans become civilised?

The Dinosaur That Fooled The World (21 February 2002)

In the mid 1800s, when Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution, one species of animal remained a mystery; where did birds fit on his evolutionary tree? Several years later his friend and colleague, Thomas Henry Huxley, came up with an answer. Huxley had recently examined a new fossil from southern Germany called Archaeopteryx which was causing considerable excitement in palaeontological circles. There were clear signs of feathers and it was obvious this was the earliest fossil evidence of a bird ever found. Huxley noticed something else as well. To him it looked as though the skeleton bore a striking similarity to that of a family of meat eating dinosaurs known as therapods.

Freak Wave (14 November 2002)

The world’s oceans claim on average one ship a week, often in mysterious circumstances. With little evidence to go on, investigators usually point at human error or poor maintenance but an alarming series of disappearances and near-sinkings, including world-class vessels with unblemished track records, has prompted the search for a more sinister cause and renewed belief in a maritime myth: the wall of water. Waves the height of an office block. Waves twice as large as any that ships are designed to ride over.

The Secret of El Dorado (19 December 2002)

In 1542, the Spanish Conquistador, Francisco de Orellana ventured along the Rio Negro, one of the Amazon Basin’s great rivers. Hunting a hidden city of gold, his expedition found a network of farms, villages and even huge walled cities. At least that is what he told an eager audience on his return to Spain. The prospect of gold drew others to explore the region, but none could find the people of whom the first Conquistadors had spoken. Orellana’s story seemed to be no more than a fanciful myth.

a cure for cancer, as well as cystic fibrosis and hundreds of other genetic illnesses. It was the simplest idea but one with enormous potential. T.Rex – Warrior or Wimp? (11 March 2004)

Tyrannosaurus rex – it’s the scariest, meanest, most bewitching dinosaur of them all. Children are captivated by the sheer savagery of the teeth. Experts marvelled at the force of its bite – ten times more powerful than anything we know today. Moviemakers made millions out of the terror it inspired. But could our picture of this monster be completely wrong?

Making Millions the Easy Way (30 September 2004)

In the mid-1990s, a team of American science students took on the might of the Las Vegas casinos, and came home with millions of dollars. Hardworking engineering students during the week, they became high-rolling gamblers by the weekend and proved that, in one game at least, the house doesn’t always win.

A War on Science (26 January 2006)

When Charles Darwin published his theory of evolution nearly 150 years ago, he shattered the dominant belief of his day – that humans were the product of divine creation. Through his observations of nature, Darwin proposed the theory of evolution by natural selection. This caused uproar. After all, if the story of creation could be doubted, so too could the existence of the creator. Ever since its proposal, this cornerstone of biology has sustained wave after wave of attack. Now some scientists fear it is facing the most formidable challenge yet: a controversial new theory called intelligent design.

Everest – Doctors in the Death Zone, part 1 (23 September 2007)

This two-part special follows a team of doctors conducting a series of groundbreaking experiments as they climb Everest, the world’s highest peak. From their laboratory tents, pitched in -25&degC conditions, the experts use their own bodies for medical tests. They push themselves to the limit to better understand the human body’s behaviour in a low-oxygen environment. The team hopes their work will lead to new, life-saving treatments for intensive care patients suffering from hypoxia, a shortage of oxygen in the body.

What on Earth is wrong with gravity? (29 January 2008)

Particle physicist and ex D:Ream keyboard player Dr Brian Cox wants to know why the Universe is built the way it is. He believes the answers lie in the force of gravity. But Newton thought gravity was powered by God, and even Einstein failed to completely solve it. Heading out with his film crew on a road trip across the USA, Brian fires lasers at the moon in Texas, goes mad in the desert in Arizona, encounters the bending of space and time at a maximum security military base, tries to detect ripples in our reality in the swamps of Louisiana and searches for hidden dimensions just outside Chicago.

Is alcohol worse than ecstasy? (5 February 2008)

Recent research has analysed the link between the harmful effects of drugs relative to their current classification by law with some startling conclusions. Perhaps most startling of all is that alcohol, solvents and tobacco (all unclassified drugs) are rated more dangerous than ecstasy, 4-MTA and LSD (all class A drugs). If the current ABC system is retained, alcohol would be rated a class A drug and tobacco class B.

Life In The Undergrowth

Open your eyes to the bizarre, ferocious and surprisingly beautiful world of the invertebrates. Join David Attenborough on his ground-breaking exploration into a spectacular miniature universe never normally seen but teeming all around us. Not just bugs and beetles, but exotic cicadas, neon glow worms, intricate silk-weaving spiders and bat-eating centipedes — not to mention a whole host of other incredible life forms and intimiate, startling behaviour. Thanks to technical innovations in lighting, optics and computerised motion control this turbulent, super-organised world is finally revealed from the perspective of its extraordinary inhabitants. These creatures may be miniscule, but they live life on a truly grand scale.

“An eye from another world; a smell-detector, investigating the path ahead. We don’t often see a snail that way, and that’s because we’ve only recently had the tiny lenses and electronic cameras that we need to explore this miniature world. But when we meet its inhabitants face to face, we suddenly realise that their behaviour can be just as meaningful to us as the behaviour of many animals more our own size.” — David Attenborough’s opening narration

1. “Invasion of the Land”

Broadcast 23 November 2005, the first episode tells how invertebrates became the first creatures of any kind to colonise dry land. Their forerunners were shelled and segmented sea creatures that existed 400 million years ago. Some of them ventured out of the water to lay their eggs in safety, and Attenborough compares those first steps with today’s mass spawning of horseshoe crabs off the Atlantic coast of North America. The oceans were abandoned altogether when the land became green with algae, mosses and liverworts. The earliest ground-dwellers were millipedes, which were quickly followed by other species. Springtails are shown to be smaller than the head of a pin and, for their size, can jump immense heights. The velvet worm hunts nocturnally and has scarcely changed over millennia, while the giant centipede can kill instantly and is shown hunting bats in Venezuela. Mating habits are explored, including the unusual ritual of leopard slugs and the meticulous nest maintenance of the harvestman. The arrival of earthworms was of great importance since they changed the nature of the soil, leading to a proliferation of plant life. Despite their aquatic ancestry, many invertebrates, particularly with those with no exoskeleton, need a moist environment to keep themselves from drying out. Finally, a creature that has adapted to a desert habitat, the scorpion, is shown as it pursues its dangerous courting dance, followed by the birth of up to fifty individuals.

2. “Taking to the Air”

Broadcast 30 November 2005, the next programme deals with flying insects. It begins in Central Europe, where the Körös River plays host to millions of giant mayflies as they rise from their larval skins to mate. — the climax of their lives. Mayflies and dragonflies were among the first to take to the air about 320 million years ago, and fossils reveal that some were similar in size to a seagull. Damselflies are also looked at in detail. One species, the rare cascade damsel, inhabits waterfalls, while another, the helicopter damsel, lives away from water (unlike all the others in its group) and is also the biggest. Several types of butterfly are shown, but all have common habits, and Attenborough describes their physiology. Together with moths, they possess the largest wings, and this surface area gives ample opportunity to display for partners or warn off predators. In cold weather, bumblebees must warm themselves to prepare for flight: they ‘disable’ their wings, enabling them to exercise their muscles without taking off. The vestigial rear wings of flies and crane flies are used for navigation, and arguably the most accomplished insect aviator is the hoverfly, which makes continuous adjustments while in the air to remain stationary. Beetles that are capable of flight have to keep their wings below covers, and a specimen of the largest, the titan beetle, is shown. Attenborough attempts to entice a male cicada, only to have it land on his ear (causing laughter from the camera team).

3. “The Silk Spinners”

Broadcast 7 December 2005, the third instalment examines the spiders and others that produce silk. Attenborough visits a cave in New Zealand that is inhabited by fungus gnats, whose illuminated larvae sit atop glistening, beaded filaments to lure their prey. The ability to spin silk developed early in the invertebrates’ history, being first used as an adhesive. The female lacewing still applies it in this way, to suspend its eggs from plant stems. Spiders first employed it as a sensitive trip line to detect movement, and Attenborough illustrates this by encouraging a trapdoor spider. The speed with which it appears causes the presenter to jump in surprise. The webs spun by orb-weavers are complex and can comprise up to 60 metres of silk and 3,000 separate attachments. A time-lapse sequence reveals their intricate construction. The largest are made by nephila and can be several metres across. The venomous red-back spins three-dimensionally, and fixes vertical lines that suspend its unlucky meals in mid-air. Meanwhile, the bolas spider swings a length of silk with a sticky blob on the end, with which to snare passing moths. Argiope exemplifies the dangers of mating that are faced by some male spiders: unless they are careful, they can be consumed by the females. The courtship of the wolf spider, though less risky, is one of the more elaborate. Its nesting habits are discussed, along with the eventual birth of its young, which cling to their mother’s back.

4. “Intimate Relations”

Broadcast 14 December 2005, the penultimate episode focuses on the relationships between invertebrates and plants or other animals. It begins with ants and aphids: the former ‘herd’ the latter and protect them in return for secreted honeydew. The activities of gall-inducing insects are described, using the example of the oak tree. Many plants recruit insects to aid pollination, offering nectar for doing so, and some predators have adopted camouflage to take advantage of this, such as the crab spider. Stick insects rely on ants to hide their eggs underground for them in safety. In the Californian desert, the blister beetle’s larvae congregate on a stem and, by releasing a pheromone, attract a male digger bee on the lookout for a female. They climb aboard their visitor and eventually transfer to its mate, which will in turn unwittingly deposit them in its nest — providing sustenance. An orchard spider is shown enduring a parasitic wasp grub, which injects its host with a hormone that deranges it and halts the spinning of webs. The grub then sucks the liquid from the spider’s body and uses the remaining silk to form its cocoon. Fairy wasps are so small that they can lay their eggs inside those of water beetles — and can even mate while inside them. The tiger beetle larva ambushes ants by plugging its burrow with its head and pouncing. However, this doesn’t work with methoca, an ant-like wasp, which can overcome the beetle and inject it with poison.

5. “Supersocieties”

Broadcast 21 December 2005, the final programme looks at the superorganisms formed by bees, ants and termites. Attenborough reveals that their colonies, whose individuals were once considered purely servile, are “full of conflict, power struggles and mutinies.” They evolved when such creatures moved away from a solitary existence and started building nests side-by-side, which led to a collective approach to caring for their young. There are about 20,000 species of bee, and a queen bumblebee is shown starting a new nest. As it grows, the inhabitants all help to maintain it and bring nectar and pollen. However, anarchy erupts when the queen starts to destroy eggs laid by her workers: she is stung to death and the colony ends. Ants live in bigger societies, which can make them vulnerable, but Attenborough goads a nest of wood ants into demonstrating their defence: formic acid. In Australia, a nest in a mangrove swamp has to be continuously rearranged to escape the tides. Meanwhile, desert-dwelling harvester ants block up nearby nests in an effort to maximise their food pickings. A bivouac of army ants is explored: they prove to be one of those most regimented organisms, where the action of each individual is for the good of the million-strong colony. Attenborough investigates magnetic termites, whose slab-like mounds are all aligned to account for the movement of the sun. Finally, a full-scale battle between termites and matabele ants is depicted in close-up.

The Secret Family Of Jesus, BBC 4

The Secret Family Of Jesus (The.Secret.Family.Of.Jesus.PDTV.XviD-VGN)

In Channel 4’s The Secret Family of Jesus, Robert Beckford explores the historical evidence for claims that Jesus had brothers and sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles and nephews, as well as a deep friendship with Mary Magdalene. Beckford and many other theologians believe that Jesus did indeed have an extended family that survived some 300 years after his death. However, they have been airbrushed from history and excised from the Bible as the result of a power struggle in the early church.

* The idea that Jesus was a divine being is backed by the claim that his mother Mary was a virgin and that his birth was the miraculous work of God.
* There is evidence from the Gospels and other documents that Mary and Joseph had other children besides Jesus, and that he grew up in an ordinary Jewish family, surrounded by brothers and sisters.
* For most Christians Mary’s virginity is central to their faith, and many consider it heresy to suggest that Jesus was not her only child.
* After Jesus died, those descended from his family and friends, led by his brother James, saw the original Christian message as a renewed version of Judaism, and first and foremost wanted to persuade other Jews to join them.
* In opposition to Jesus’ family, Christians led by Peter and Paul wanted to establish a new religion to include non-Jews.
* Peter and Paul’s version won out. They placed more emphasis on Jesus’ divinity rather than his humanity, and wrote the human story of Jesus’ family out of Christian history.
* Peter and Paul’s version of Christianity developed in opposition to the Jewish Christianity of Jesus family and friends and resulted in a seam of antisemitism down the ages.
* Some churches explain the references in the Bible to Jesus’ brothers and sisters by saying either that they were not Mary’s children but the children of Joseph from a previous marriage, or that they were cousins of Jesus.
* According to the earliest Gospel (of Mark) Jesus was a disciple of John, who taught and baptised him, and not the other way round.
* Jews and Muslims see Jesus as a prophet – a human being with a powerful message to change the world – rather than the son of God.
* Some say that the historical evidence of Jesus’ humanity and teachings invalidates 2,000 years of Church teaching that has given more emphasis to his divinity.
* Some argue that Jesus’ humanity and revolutionary teachings – his blueprint for a ‘Kingdom of God on earth’ – are the foundations of Christian belief.
* Christian tradition says that salvation can only come through faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and a literal belief that he died and rose again.

Human Instincts – Proff Robert Winston

Hosted by Dr. Robert Winston, Professor of Fertility Studies at London University,
this lively four-part British documentary series tried to explain why we do what we do,
and why we’ve been doing it for so many years. Using candid-camera films, computer graphics,
and funny props, Winston demonstrated how humanity’s instinctual urges are ancient in origin
and have developed over centuries of civilization (or lack of same). Among the points made in
the course of the series is the importance of taste and smell in the formation of likes, dislikes,
and romantic relationships. Individual episodes were as “Born to Survive,” “Deepest Desires,”
“The Will to Win,” and “Natural Born Heroes.” In America,

What Really Killed the Dinosaurs?

What Really Killed the Dinosaurs?
New challenges to the impact theory
First Broadcast: 7 October 2004
Until recently most scientists thought they knew what killed off the dinosaurs. A 10km-wide meteorite had smashed into the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, causing worldwide forest fires, tsunamis several kilometres high, and an ‘impact winter’ – in which dust blocked out the sun for months or years. It was thought that the dinosaurs were blasted, roasted and frozen to death, in that order.
But now a small but vociferous group of scientists believes there is increasing evidence that this ‘impact’ theory could be wrong. That suggestion has generated one of the bitterest scientific rows of recent times.
The impact theory
The impact theory was beautifully simple and appealing. Much of its evidence was drawn from a thin layer of rock known as the ‘KT boundary’. This layer is 65 million years old (which is around the time when the dinosaurs disappeared) and is found around the world exposed in cliffs and mines.
For supporters of the impact theory, the KT boundary layers contained two crucial clues. In 1979 scientists discovered that there were high concentrations of a rare element called iridium, which they thought could only have come from an asteroid. Right underneath the iridium was a layer of ’spherules’, tiny balls of rock which seemed to have been condensed from rock which had been vapourised by a massive impact.
On the basis of the spherules and a range of other evidence, Dr Alan Hildebrand of the University of Calgary deduced that the impact must have happened in the Yucatan peninsula, at the site of a crater known as Chicxulub. Chemical analysis later confirmed that the spherules had indeed come from rocks within the crater.
The impact theory seemed to provide the complete answer. In many locations around the world, the iridium layer (evidence of an asteroid impact) sits right on top of the spherule layer (evidence that the impact was at Chicxulub). So Hildebrand and other supporters of the impact theory argued that there was one massive impact 65 million years ago, and that it was at Chicxulub. This, they concluded, must have finished off the dinosaurs by a variety of mechanisms.
Challenging the theory
But a group of scientists led by Prof Gerta Keller of Princeton and Prof Wolfgang Stinnesbeck of the University of Karlsruhe begged to differ. They uncovered a series of geological clues which suggests the truth may be far more complicated. In short, that the crater in the Yucatan is too old to have killed off the dinosaurs.
They concentrated on a series of rock formations in Mexico where the iridium layer was separated from the spherule layer by many metres of sandstone. That opinion sparked a massive row, as the supporters of the impact theory such as Prof Jan Smit of Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, rubbished Keller’s ideas. Smit argued that the sandstone had been deposited by massive tsunami waves caused by the asteroid, and so did not undermine the idea of a single impact.
But Keller’s team found evidence – such as ancient worm burrows – that suggested that the deposition of the sandstone had been interrupted many times. They concluded that there was a gap of some 300,000 years between the deposition of the spherules (from the Chicxulub crater) and the iridium (from an asteroid). Therefore there must have been two impacts.
The Chicxulub impact, they said, was too old to have finished off the dinosaurs, and there must have been another impact somewhere else which was to blame. That crater has not yet been found.
More challenges
Keller’s views provoked a lively scientific row. In 2001, to try to resolve the dispute an international group of scientists extracted rock cores from deep within the Yucatan crater. Predictably, each side thought the evidence supported their argument.
Although still in the minority, Keller’s work does now attract some support. And a range of scientists have begun to question other hypotheses connected with the impact theory. Claire Belcher of Royal Holloway, University of London, has found evidence which suggests that wildfires were not widespread in North America following the KT impact.
Prof Dave Archibald of San Diego State University is convinced that the survival of creatures such as frogs disproves the idea that the dinosaurs perished amid acid rain as strong as battery acid, or that an ‘impact winter’ caused a massive and sustained drop in temperature.
Dr Norman MacLeod of the Natural History Museum in London is among a large group of scientists who are convinced the dinosaurs were already being driven to extinction by climate change long before the arrival of the KT impact, or impacts.

A History Of Britain

Hailed as one of the “Top Ten Television Events of 2001″ by The New York Times.

From the dawn of civilization to the 20th century, A HISTORY OF BRITAIN re-animates familiar tales and illuminates overlooked aspects of England’s past. Written and hosted by historian Simon Schama (the bestselling author of Rembrandt’s Eyes and The Embarrassment of Riches), this monumental The History Channel®/BBC co-production has been hailed by critics for its colorful–and controversial–approach, which discards timelines and tiresome lineages for a lively look at the personalities and cultures that infuse British history.

From India to Ireland, the Norman Invasion to the American Revolution, Schama spotlights the epic themes and towering figures that transformed an island “at the edge of the world” into the greatest empire on earth, examining the impact of this extraordinary heritage on the modern nation.

All 15 episodes of the landmark series are available on DVD for the first time in this extraordinary collector’s set that belongs in the library of every history buff.

Disc 1
Beginnings
(circa 3100 BC – 1000 AD)
From Neolithic villages like Skara Brae to the arrival of the Romans and the Viking invasions of the 8th century, A HISTORY OF BRITAIN opens with a whirlwind look at the forces that defined life in England in the years before the Battle of Hastings.

Conquest!
(circa 1000 – 1087)
The path of Western Civilization changed in nine hours. Without William the Conqueror’s victory in 1066, Britqain might well have been a Scandinavian province. But the Battle of Hastings made Britain part of an Anglo-Norman empire that, in time, overshadowed even the kings of France.

Dynasty
(circa 1087 – 1216)
The great Norman empire tore itself apart over questions of who should rule. Out of this bloody struggle emerged a new dynasty, one that produced three of the most famous and misunderstood kings in British history: Henry II, Richard I, and John.

Biographies:
Simon Schama
King Edward the Confessor

Disc 2
Nations
(circa 1216 – 1348)
In the 13th century, the people of Britain found their voice: proud, defiant, and nationalistic. Its language derived not from idealism, but as a response to the subjugation in the campaigns of Edward I to extend his authority over Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.

King Death
(1348 – 1500)
The plague arrived in England in 1348 and killed over 1 million people – a third of the population – in just over a decade. But it also paved the way for a series of radical reforms that saw Britain stripped of its feudal remnants and ready to face the future by 1500.

Burning Convictions
(circa 1500 – 1558)
Under Henry VIII, loyalty to one’s faith was treason and loyalty to one’s king was heresy. Henry’s break with the Church marked the beginning of an extraordinary period that saw a nation largely at peace with its Catholic soul bribed, tortured, and cajoled into accepting Protestantism.

Biographies:
Robert the Bruce
William Wallace

Disc 3
The Body of the Queen
(1558 – 1603)
Elizabeth I led a Protestant nation to greatness in a hostile, Catholic world, all the while deflecting intense pressure to marry and conceive an heir. Her success stands in marked contrast to the fate of her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots.

The British Wars
(1603 – 1649)
Charles I ascended to the throne in 1625 with a firm belief in the Divine Right of Kings. This almost immediately put him at odds with the Parliament, and their struggle soon expanded to every corner of the British Isles.

Revolutions
(1649 – 1689)
England emerged from 50 years of civil wars a kingless republic led by Oliver Cromwell, yet the fighting was far from over. Cromwell sent troops to Scotland and Ireland, and after his death and the restoration of the monarchy, a brief period of peace came to an end during the reign of James II.

Biographies:
Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots
Queen Elizabeth I

Disc 4
Britannia Incorporated
(circa 1690 – circa 1750)
England in the 1690s saw the victors of the “Glorious Revolution” celebrating the dawn of a new era under William III, while in Scotland the Jacobites still supported the deposed King James II. The new Britain was built upon money and commerce, not God.

The Wrong Empire
(circa 1750 – circa 1800)
With political stability and commercial prosperity at home, Britain turned its sights outward. The Wrong Empire travels from the back streets of revolutionary Boston to the slums of Calcutta to chronicle the astonishing transformation that followed. It’s a story of exploration and daring – but also of exploitation and conflict.

Forces of Nature
(circa 1780 – circa 1832)
Led by the radical intellectuals of the “romantic generation,” Britain experienced a flowering of political discourse in the late 18th century, based on an appreciation of nature and the common man. But while similar forces led to revolution in France, England avoided that bloody fate.

Biographies:
The Jacobites
King George III

Disc 5
Victoria and Her Sisters
(1830 – circa 1910)
In 1837, the 18-year-old Queen Victoria ascended to the throne in the midst of a radical transformation driven by technology and industrialization. The young queen paved the way for a generation of women to assume prominent roles in every area of British society.

Empire of Good Intentions
(circa 1830 – circa 1925)
As the ruler of the largest empire the world had ever seen, Britain hoped to deliver “civilization” while saving its subjects from famine and disease. But from Ireland to India, this noble purpose dissolved ina morass of blood, grief and broken promises.

The Two Winstons
(20th century)
A HISTORY OF BRITAIN: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION concludes with a comparison of two of the most influential 20th century Britons – George Orwell and Winston Churchill. Schama’s compelling analysis of their lives and legacies illuminates fundamental questions surrounding the role of history in society.

Queen Victoria

Horizon – Secrets of the Star Disc

This is the extraordinary story of how a small metal disc is rewriting the epic saga of how civilisation first came to Europe, 3600 years ago.

When grave robbers ransacked a Bronze Age tomb in Germany, they had no idea that they had unearthed the find of a lifetime. But they knew that it was worth selling. It was a small bronze disc of exquisite design. So they contacted the archaeologist Harald Meller, offering to sell it to him for £300,000.

Meller went deep into the criminal underworld and, after a police sting, he got his disc. It depicted the sun, the moon and the stars. This suggested an understanding of the heavens greater than that of the first great civilisations, like Egypt. Could it possibly be real?

After exhaustive tests, the disc was declared genuine. Then a team of crack scientists pieced together what it meant. What emerged is a true marvel.

This disc, it seems, is a Bronze Age Bible, combining an advanced understanding of the stars with some of the most sophisticated religious imagery of the age. In intellectual achievement and also age, it surpasses anything yet found in Egypt or Greece. It seems that civilisation had already dawned in Europe.

NB: The quality is fairly good, although there may be an occasional picture or sound breakup, these should not detract from viewing.

Connections 1, 1978 – James Burke

This ten volume series was made in 1978 by turning science into a detective story, James Burke creates a series that will fascinate students and adults alike. This interdisciplinary approach has never before been applied to history or science and it succeeds tremendously. Winner of the Red Ribbon in the American Film Festival, the scope of the series covers 19 countries and 150 locations, requiring over 14 months of filming.

As the Sherlock Holmes of science, Burke tracks through 12,000 years of history for the clues that lead us to eight great life changing inventions-the atom bomb, telecommunications, the computer, the production line, jet aircraft, plastics, rocketry and television. Burke postulates that such changes occur in response to factors he call triggers, some of them seemingly unrelated. These have their own triggering effects, causing change in totally unrelated fields as well. And so the connections begin…

Volume 1:The Trigger Effect
Both the beginning and the end of the story are here. The end is our present dependence on complex technological networks illustrated by the NYC power blackouts. Life came almost to a standstill: support systems taken for granted failed. How did we become so helpless? Technology originated with the plow and agriculture. Each invention demands its own follow-up: once started, it is hard to stop. This segment ends in Kuwait, where society has leapt from ancient Egypt to the technology of today in 30 years.

Volume 2: Death in the Morning
How did a test of gold’s purity revolutionize the world 2500 years ago and lead to the atomic bomb? Standardizing precious metal in coins stimulated trade from Greece to Persia, causing the construction of a huge commercial center and library at Alexandria. This wealth of nautical knowledge aided navigators 14 centuries later. Mariners discovered that the compass’s magnetized needle did not point directly north. Investigations into the nature of magnetism led to the discovery of electricity, radar and to the atomic bomb.

Volume 3: Distant Voices
Telecommunications exist because the Normans wore stirrups at the Battle of Hastings- a simple advance that caused a revolution in the increasingly expensive science of warfare. Europe turned its attention to making money to wage wars. As mine shafts were dug deeper, they became flooded, stimulating scientists like Galileo to investigate vacuums, air pressure and other natural laws to mine deeper silver. This led to the discovery of electricity and magnetism’s relationship and to the development of radio, and deep space telecommunications that may enable contact with galactic civilizations.

Volume 4: Faith in Numbers
Each development in the organization of systems (political, economic, mechanical, electronic)influences the next, by logic, by genius, by chance, or by utterly unforeseen events. The transition from the Middle ages to the Renaissance was influenced by the rise of commercialism, a sudden change in climate, famine and the Black Death, which set the stage for the invention of the printing press.

Volume 5: The Wheel of Fortune
The power to see into the future with computers originally rested with priest-astronomers who knew the proper times to plant and harvest. The constellations influenced life spectacularly, particularly when the ailing Caliph of Baghad was cured by an astrologer using Greek lore. His ancient medical secrets were translated and spread throughout Europe, ushering in an era of scientific inquiry. The need for more precise measuring devices in navigation gave rise to the pendulum clock, the telescope, forged steel and interchangeable machine parts-the basis of modern industrial system.

Volume 6: Thunder in the Skies
A dramatically colder climate gripped Europe during the 13th century profoundly affecting the course of history for the next seven centuries. The changes in energy usage transformed architecture and forced the creation of new power sources. The coming of the Industrial Revolution, spurred on by advances in the steam engine, scarred England indelibly: but a moment in history later, gasoline-powered engines opened the way to the heavens.

Volume 7: The Long Chain
Often, materials discovered by accident alter the course of the world. In the 1600s Dutch commercial freighters controlled Atlantic trade routes. Competing British lines induced America to produce pitch to protect hulls of their royal vessels. This arrangement lasted until 1776, after which a Scottish inventor tried to produce pitch from coal tar. By the time he succeeded the navy was using copper instead. Subsequent experiments with coal tar yielded gaslight lamps, waterproofed garments, a brilliant mauve dye that established the German chemical industry and nylon, the first of the miracle plastics.

Volume 8: Eat, Drink and Be Merry
When Napoleon marched huge forces across Europe, he needed an efficient way to store provisions. A Frenchman preserved sterilized food in empty champagne bottles, an idea modified by the British, who tried tin cans. Still, canned foods sometimes spoiled, which led to experiments with refrigeration. Later, it was discovered that gases may be stored at very low temperatures in a thermos flask, a device handy for picnics, for polar explorers and for, storing large quantities of liquid oxygen and hydrogen. When lit by a spark these gases can send rockets into space.

Volume 9: Countdown
What happens when you combine a carbon arc light, a billiard ball coating, a spoked wheel and consecutive images? Motion pictures! Complex and sometimes incredible events led to Thomas Edison’s remarkable invention; the beginnings of limelight on a Irish mountain; George Eastman’s production of celluloid from the slightly explosive gun cotton; the “magic lantern” of an Austrian ballistics teacher. Then Eadweard Muybridge settled a bet in 1872 by photographs; does a horse raise all four feet when galloping? (Yes.) Today moving pictures, together with television, are enormously powerful mass media. Have we become trapped by our own technology?

Volume 10: Yesterday, Tomorrow and You
“Why did we do it this way?” Essential moments from the previous programs are reviewed to illustrate the common factors that make for change. Will they go on operating to affect our futures? And if so, can we recognize them? The second half looks at the extent to which we have become increasingly incapable of understanding how change occurs in our complex world and at why we are in such a predicament. Finally, there is a look ahead to the need for radical change in the availability and use of information in the future, if we are to remain in control of our destinies.

The World At War – New Links, The definitive Documentary on World War II

The World at War, The definitive Documentary on World War II
255-700mb each, 52min

“The World at War” covers the entire history of World War II from the causes of the 1920s to the aftermath of the Cold War in the 1950s. Emphasis is also placed on several inside story episodes, where events are covered which occurred inside Germany and Japan such as resistance to Hitler, life in general under a dictatorial regime, and particular emphasis is focused on the Jewish Holocaust.

Producer Jeremy Isaacs asked a historian to list fifteen key campaigns of the war and devoted one episode to each. The remaining eleven episodes were devoted to other issues such as home life in Britain and Germany, the experience of occupation in The Netherlands, and the Nazis’ use of genocide.

26 :02×12 – Cosmic Collisions (Mar/04/2008)
 The Universe Complete Series 1 & 2

It’s been said that our universe is a cosmic shooting gallery. Gravity is moving everything around and things are bound to collide. Astronomers are attempting to understand how these collisions occur in the dark recesses of space. Learn about collisional families, which are clusters of comets and asteroids; planetary collisions; mass extinction impacts involving asteroids and comets; stars collisions; and galaxy cluster collisions. Cutting-edge computer graphics are used to bring this series down to earth as the heavens yield their greatest secrets.

Guest Stars: Amy Mainzer as Herself
27 :02×13 – Colonizing Space (Mar/11/2008)
 The Universe Complete Series 1 & 2

Space colonization is no longer the fodder of science fiction, it is becoming a reality. Examine the efforts underway to establish a human colony on Mars, including how they plan to grow food, recycle wastewater and introduce greenhouse gases to revive the red planet and make it more habitable for humans. Cutting-edge computer graphics are used to bring the universe down to earth to show what life would be like on Mars, and to imagine what kind of life forms might evolve in alien atmospheres.

28 :02×14 – Nebulas (Apr/01/2008)
 The Universe Complete Series 1 & 2

Take a tour through the “Art Gallery of the Galaxy” and view what are considered the “crown jewels” of the heavens. Nebulas are mysterious clouds of gas that aren’t classified as stars, planets, moons or asteroids. Astronomers use the most sophisticated techniques to view them since they are practically invisible to the naked eye. Nothing less than stunning, nebulas glow, reflect or obscure the galaxy’s light with amazing swirls of color. Nebulas mark the regions where the nothingness of space first coalesces, where stars are born and where stars die. Cutting-edge computer graphics are used to bring the universe down to earth.

29 :02×15 – Wildest Weather in the Cosmos (Apr/08/2008)
 The Universe Complete Series 1 & 2

Imagine a tornado so powerful, it can form a planet, or winds sweeping across a planet but blowing at 6,000 miles per hour! How about rain….made of iron? Sounds like science fiction, but this type of weather is occurring daily in our solar system. Scientists are just beginning to unlock the secrets of these planets and their atmospheres. Can this research help scientists solve long unanswered questions that we have about Earth? As our own planet churns with the effects of global warming, it’s natural to look into the heavens and wonder about the rest of the real estate.

30 :02×16 – Biggest Things in the Universe (Apr/15/2008)
 The Universe Complete Series 1 & 2

We can’t compare anything on earth to the biggest things known in space. The Lymann Alpha blob is a bubble like structure containing countless galaxies–perhaps the biggest object in the entire universe. Regions of radio-emitting gas called “radio lobes” could be even bigger. Then there are super galaxy clusters which are hundreds of galaxies merged together due to cosmic collisions. Discover which is the largest planet, star, star cluster, constellation, black hole, volcano, galaxy, explosions, moon, storm, impact crater and “void” in space.

Guest Stars: Neil Tyson as Himself, Amy Mainzer as Herself
31 :02×17 – Gravity (Apr/22/2008)
 The Universe Complete Series 1 & 2

Gravity is the most powerful and exacting force in the universe. It is pervasive and penetrating. Gravity binds us together, its reach hangs stars in the sky and its grip crushes light. Gravity holds planets together, and leashes them to their suns. Without gravity, stars, comets, moons, nebulae, and even the Earth itself would not exist. Explore how science and humanity discovered, overcame and utilized gravity. Learn what it takes to propel objects into the heavens, to ride a wave or to ski down a slope. Take a front row seat as an astronaut subjects himself to the weightless wonders of the specially modified aircraft used to train astronauts known as the “Vomit Comet.”

32 :02×18 – Cosmic Apocalypse (Apr/29/2008)
 The Universe Complete Series 1 & 2

The Universe as we know it is condemned to death. Space, matter and even time will one day cease to exist and there’s nothing we can do about it. Harsh realities are revealed about the future of our Universe; it may collapse and burn or it might be gripped by a galactic ice age. Either of these scenarios might be a long way off. However, our Universe could suddenly be destroyed by a “random quantum fluctuation”, a bubble of destruction that can obliterate the entire cosmos in the blink of an eye. No matter how it ends, life in our Universe is doomed.

Every year since 1996, Jeremy Clarkson has released his own brand of annual DVDs, all of which have had a very similar flair throughout. Each DVD will normally contain its own theme, and are often a good source of entertainment, even if not quite as sophisticated as Top Gear.

In this release, Jeremy attempts to find “the best handling car in the world, ever”, in comparison to the previous editions quest to find the overall “best car in the world ever.” The bulk of the release is therefore catered to this, as Jeremy, along with Tim Harvey and Richard Burns, pits 10 of what he considers the best handling cars around the track, before coming to a decision. This is one of my personal favourites out of all of his releases. As well as cheesy guitar music throughout, these releases also have an annual tradition of Clarkson destroying “some kind of awful car”, which for me is always the highlight. In this instance, Jeremy destroys:

The FSO Polonez – two of these cars are put in an elaborate game of conkers, by smashing them into each other before the inevitable explosion.
The Chevrolet Corvette – chased through a desert by a helicopter gunship, which is eventually hunted down. One of his most technically spectacular feats to date.
The Lada Riva – torn in half in a quarry.

worlds most powerful explosions

How many documentaries have you seen about explosions? There are loads out there, but none top this one. Here is the rundown of the explosions in the documentary.

1. Seoul, South Korea – a liquefied petroleum gas station along with a tanker truck and several storage containers explodes multiple times. Good video footage from a helicopter. (A+)

2. Murdock, Illinois – 11 derailed train cars filled with petroleum gas explodes in a massive fireball and then at night the fire spreads to another car filled with Isobutene causing another huge blast. Decent coverage from a news crew. (A -)

3. Sao Paulo, Brazil – at an illegal festival, hot air balloons launch fireworks over the crowd. A malfunctioning balloon rains fireworks onto the ground where more are stored and they erupt into the audience. (C)

4. A series of controlled demolitions as a building is imploded by professionals and their techniques for carrying this out. (D) (Educational but not very exciting)

5. The decommissioned Royal Canadian Navy ships H.M.C.S. McKenzie and H.M.C.S. Columbia are sunk to create artificial reefs. They show the methods of doing this and the detonation processes. (D) (Interesting but again, not very exciting)

6. Mexico City, Mexico – a train with 30 passengers collides with a tanker truck carrying 3000 gallons of gasoline. The ensuing explosion, occurring after passengers were evacuated, is a major one and is well captured by a news helicopter. (A -)

7. Several different detonations of nuclear weapons being tested (Hiroshima and Nagasaki historical segments too) and the subsequent damage and effects caused by these blasts. (B – )

8. Aviation related sequences – the Hindenburg explosion and then staged detonations on a Lockheed L-1011, a Boeing 747, and a crash landing by a remotely piloted Boeing 707 – all of this is research by engineers to improve aircraft design and safety measures. (D+)

9. Several different rocket explosions (malfunctions during a launch or afterwards) including a rather extreme and dangerous one at about 1 to 2 thousand feet directly above Cape Canaveral, Florida moments after a liftoff. (B)

10. Henderson, Nevada – a production plant near the city manufactures Ammonium Perchlorate (a crucial ingredient in rocket fuel) and the plant is burning out of control. Stored on the property is a purported 9 million pounds of fuel. The initial explosion is massive in itself but the follow on blast is astonishing. It registers 3.5 on the Richter scale and vaporizes all surrounding structures. You can see the shock waves racing along the desert floor. This great video footage is captured from a work crew on a nearby hilltop with a birds-eye view of the plant. Due to this event, an estimated 7000 homes and businesses suffered blast damage and some of these structures were up to 2 miles away from ground zero. (A)

Quick video on youtube

Full description from wiki
The Future Is Wild was a 2003 joint Animal Planet/ORF (Austria) and ZDF (Germany) co-production, which used computer-generated imagery to show the possible future of life on Earth. The seven-part television series was released with a companion book written by geologist Dougal Dixon, author of several “anthropologies/zoologies of the future” such as After Man: A Zoology of the Future, in conjunction with natural history television producer John Adams.

Based on research and interviews with dozens of scientists, this documentary was put together to show how life could evolve in the future if Homo sapiens became extinct; the Discovery Channel broadcast softened the harsh outlook by stating the human race had completely migrated from the Earth and had sent back probes to examine the progress of life on Earth. The show was played out in the form of a nature documentary. For a time in 2005, a theme park based on this program was opened in Japan.

Ecosystems
Twelve ecosystems were chosen at three points in time:-

5 million years’ time

The world is in an ice age and there are giant seabirds and carnivorous bats. The ice sheets extended to as far south as Paris in the northern hemisphere and as far north as Buenos Aires in the southern hemisphere. The Amazon Rainforests dried up and opened into grasslands. The North American plains shrivelled to become cold desert. Africa collided with Europe and closed off the Mediterranean Sea again. With no water to replace it in the dry climate, the Mediterranean dried out into a giant salt flat dotted with brine lakes, as it has been in the past. Most of Europe became frozen tundra.
Denizens
Babookari, a ground-living New World monkey, descended from the present-day uakari.
Carakiller, a giant flightless bird of prey, descended from the present-day caracara.
Cryptile, a frilled lizard that inhabits salt flats and has a sticky frill.
Deathgleaner, a giant carnivorous bat.
Gannetwhale, a seal-like seabird, descended from the present-day gannet.
Gryken, a slender terrestrial mustelid, descended from the present-day pine marten.
Rattleback, an armoured rodent, descended from the present-day paca.
Desert Rattleback, related to the rattleback.
Scrofa, a rock-dwelling boar.
Shagrat, a giant marmot which lives in herds and migrates with the seasons in northern Europe.
Snowstalker, a giant saber-toothed wolverine.
Spink, a small burrowing bird, descended from the present-day quail.

100 million years’ time

The world is very hot, octopuses have come onto land, and there are enormous tortoises. Much of the land became flooded by shallow seas. The surrounding land became brackish swamps. Antarctica drifted towards the tropics, and once again it became covered with trees as it had 300 million years before. Australia collided with North America and Asia, forcing up a monstrous mountain plateau higher than the modern Himalayas.
Denizens

Falconfly, a giant predatory wasp.
Grass Tree, a species of plant in the Great Plateau that is harvested by Silver Spiders to feed the Poggles.
Great Blue Windrunner, a giant four-winged bird: its legs have flight feathers on and can act as gliding surfaces.
Lurkfish, a giant big-mouthed electric fish.
Ocean Phantom, a giant jellyfish.
Poggle, the last mammal. Ever
Reef Glider, a swimming sea slug.
Roachcutter, a swift jungle bird.
Silver Spider, a large colonial spider.
Spindle Trooper, a giant sea spider. They live in Ocean Phantoms, which they defend against enemies.
Spitfire Bird, a species of flutterbird which spits corrosive liquid.
False Spitfire Bird, a species of bird that resembles the Spitfire Bird, but is harmless.
Spitfire Beetle, a cooperative predatory beetle which preys on Spitfire Birds.
Spitfire Tree, a flowering tree that makes two chemicals collected by the Spitfire Birds, which in the process pollinates the tree.
Swampus, a terrestrial octopus.
Toraton, a giant tortoise, grows to 120 tons.

200 million years’ time

The world is recovering from a mass extinction caused by a flood basalt eruption, much larger than the one that created the Siberian Traps. Fish have taken to the skies, squid to the forests and the world’s largest ever desert is filled with strange worms and insects. All the continents have collided into one another and fused into a single supercontinent, a second Pangaea. Unlike the cephalopods of 100 million years ago, such as the Swampus, which were amphibious, the cephalopods this day, such as the megasquid, no longer have to return to the water to live. At this time, mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians are all gone.
Denizens
Bumblebeetle, a flying insect which lives and breeds inside the carcasses of dead Flish.
Deathbottle, a carnivorous plant, residing in the Rainshadow Desert.
Desert Hopper, a hopping snail with a modified single foot.
Forest Flish, a bird-like fish that no longer lives in the oceans, but instead flies like birds.
Flish, another type of Flish that relies on the ocean more than the Forest Flish.
Garden Worm, an algae-filled worm that feeds only on sunlight.
Megasquid, an elephant-sized omnivorous terrestrial squid. Its 8 arms have evolved into walking legs like an elephant’s. It uses its two long tentacles for feeding.
Rainbow squid, a giant chameleonic squid.
Sharkopath, a bioluminescent pack-hunting shark.
Silverswimmer, fish-sized neotenous crustaceans.
Slickribbon, a cave-dwelling predatory worm.
Slithersucker, a giant slime mold.
Squibbon, a terrestrial tree-swinging squid. Relatively intelligent; the likeliest ancestor for future sapient life.
Terabyte, a colonial termite that has become highly specialized.
Gloomworm, a primitive bacteria-eating worm.

Episode List

Although there are presumably many thousands of different species around at each point in the future, each episode generally focuses on just one food chain.

1. Welcome to the Future (a brief skim over the coming episodes)
2. Return of the Ice (5 million years time, in the new frozen wastes of Europe)
3. The Vanished Sea (5 million years time, in the Mediterranean salt desert)
4. Prairies of Amazonia (5 million years time, in the grasslands where the Amazon Rainforest once existed)
5. Cold Kansas Desert (5 million years time, in North America)
6. Waterland (100 million years time, in the swamps of Bengal)
7. Flooded World (100 million years time, in the shallow seas)
8. Tropical Antarctica (100 million years time, in an Antarctica which is now on the equator)
9. The Great Plateau (100 million years time, in an area that was once Tibet)
10. The Endless Desert (200 million years time, in the vast desert of central Pangaea)
11. The Global Ocean (200 million years time, in, obviously, the ocean of the world)
12. Graveyard Desert (200 million years time, in a rainshadow desert)
13. The Tentacled Forest (200 million years time, in the rainforest)

History Channel – Soviet Top Secret Weapons

2001996940047018327 rs History Channel Soviet Top Secret Weapons

For the entire period of the Cold War, a large proportion of the Soviet Union’s economy and massive scientific establishment was dedicated to the development and refinement of new and better weapons. During the 50s and 60s, the Soviet government’s paranoia about Western technical superiority was at its height.

Venus Unveiled – Documentary

Beneath the reflective atmosphere of Venus lurks a planet that has puzzled man for centuries.
Another from the Excellent “Images of the Cosmos” series of Astronomy programmes.
Mars may get all the press but Venus should be almost a twin of earth considering it’s orbital distance and size.
Instead it is a Hell planet. Why ? This explores Venus in quite some depth (and I have found few programmes that have BTW though I remember a documentary about catastrophism and Venus from somewhere) Answering some of the old questions that perplexed Huygens about it’s mysterious surface while posing new questions about it’s strange exogeology, atmosphere & surface features.
